Lesson Plans and Ideas for Treatment
One of my favorite tasks as an aspiring speech pathologist is working with students in schools who struggle communicating. I believe the most effective way to help them communicate is by incorporating what they are learning about in their other areas of study, mainly Language Arts. The first day we meet will be focused on communication through writing, while the second day of the week will be focused on speech pronunciation and quality. Here are a couple of sample lesson plans I have created that could be helpful in working with students in a school setting. I have also included my own research on students who suffer from aphasia and how writing therapy can be an effective form of treatment.
A two week look at a treatment plan using these lesson plans may look something like this:
Goal: Meet with the students twice a week
Week 1: Monday- ask students what they have been learning in Language arts, contact teachers to see how to best utilize their current curriculum. In this case, use the poetry unit as an oportunity for the students to recognize syllables and write out their own work using the supplemental handout. As my research suggests, the act of writing may help the students to express themselves in a way that they otherwise struggle doing.
Wednesday- have the students read their poetry out loud, practicing good pronunciation and speech techniques that we have discussed. (this will depend on the type and severity of the speech disorder of the student).
Week 2: Monday- similar to the week before, ask students about their week and contact the teachers to check on curriculum. This week, we will focus on the use of similes. We will use literary examples just as they have done in class, then practice writing our own similes.
Wednesday- we will use this day to read our similes out loud, once again practicing good pronunciation and speech techniques.
